Current Quarantine Requirements After COVID Exposure

What is the current quarantine guidance for fully vaccinated, asymptomatic healthcare providers who are exposed to COVID-19?

A NYSCA member asks:

What is the current guidance for quarantining and closing the office if a provider who is vaccinated is exposed to somebody who tests positive for COVID-19 and is asymptomatic?

The New York State Department of Health has provided clear guidance on quarantine requirements and the definition of "close contacts."

In part, they state: "Asymptomatic individuals who have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 do not need to quarantine after exposure to COVID-19. Fully vaccinated individuals should be tested for COVID-19 between the third and fifth day after exposure and must wear a mask in public indoor settings for 14 days or until receiving a negative test result. Fully vaccinated is defined as being 2 weeks or more after either receipt of the second dose in a 2-dose series, or 2 weeks or more after receipt of one dose of a single-dose vaccine."

Additional guidance from the NYS DOH is provided using the link below for individuals who are not fully vaccinated and have been exposed to someone with confirmed or suspected COVID-19.

Quarantines & Contacts

Likewise, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states: "People who are fully vaccinated do NOT need to quarantine after contact with someone who had COVID-19 unless they have symptoms. However, fully vaccinated people should get tested 5-7 days after their exposure, even if they don’t have symptoms and wear a mask indoors in public for 14 days following exposure or until their test result is negative." As a reminder, per NYS regulation the continued use of masks in healthcare settings is required, regardless of vaccination status.
