New York Chiropractic College Names Next President

Seneca Falls:  Thomas R. De Vita, DC, chair of the New York Chiropractic College Board of Trustees, today announced the selection of Michael A. Mestan, DC, EdD, as the College's next president, succeeding Frank J. Nicchi, DC, MS, upon his retirement, scheduled for August 31, 2017.

In 2015, knowing that Dr. Nicchi was approaching retirement, the Board of Trustees appointed a Succession Committee. Following many months of due-diligence, including discussions with Dr. Mestan, senior leadership, Faculty Senate officers, and others, the Committee and the entire Board concluded that Dr. Mestan was the best choice to be the next president of the College. On October 15, 2016, Dr. Mestan was offered and accepted the position. Speaking for the Board of Trustees, Dr. De Vita observed, "Dr. Mestan is an outstanding choice. We are confident in his ability and excited to support him as he leads the College to even higher levels of excellence in the future."

Reflecting on his appointment, Dr. Mestan noted, "It is a great honor to have the opportunity to serve NYCC as its next president. The College has a rich history of great leaders, faculty, and alumni who serve the public through academic excellence, quality patient care, and professional leadership. I accept the responsibility of keeping NYCC moving into the future while advancing our mission and never forgetting who we are or where we came from."

Now serving NYCC as executive vice president and provost and holding an academic appointment in the chiropractic program, Dr. Mestan joined the College in 2002. He held positions as department head for clinical sciences, dean of the chiropractic program, and executive vice president for academic affairs before being appointed to his current position in 2010. Previously, he held academic and administrative appointments at Parker University in Dallas, Texas. He has also practiced chiropractic and served as a diagnostic imaging consultant.

Having earned his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from the National University of Health Sciences in 1994, Dr. Mestan completed his residency in Diagnostic Imaging at Southern California University of Health Sciences. In 2011 he earned a master's degree, and in 2013 a Doctor of Education degree, both in educational administration with a specialization in higher education, from the University of Rochester's Margaret Warner Graduate School of Education and Human Development in Rochester, New York. Dr. Mestan resides in Seneca Falls with his wife and three children.

"I highly commend the Board of Trustees for its decision to appoint Dr. Michael Mestan as the next president," said Dr. Nicchi. "Over the years, I have witnessed firsthand his resolute commitment to the College's mission of excellence along with his exceptional enthusiasm and unique ability to effectively execute a vision.  His passion for the College and its history, his inclusive management style, and his extensive training in higher education leadership make him ideally suited to successfully advance NYCC to the next level of distinction."

Michael Mestan, DC
