ICD-10 applies to all parties covered by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), not just providers who bill Medicare or Medicaid. ICD10 diagnosis codes an updated every year. Improper coding will result in a claim denial. Remember, proper coding is essential for documentation, reporting and reimbursement.
The 2026 release takes effect on October 1, 2025 and applies to patient encounters occurring from October 1, 2025 through September 30, 2026. The current set contains nearly 500 new codes, 28 deletions, and 38 revisions - all consistent with the trend of reporting diagnoses with greater specificity. This brings the total 2026 ICD10cm codes up to 74,719.
