Updated Mandated Reporter Training - Due November 2026

As part of New York State’s ongoing commitment to protecting vulnerable children, recent legislation has expanded training requirements for mandated reporters.

Chapter 25 of the Laws of 2024 amended Social Services Law § 413 to ensure that professionals are better equipped to recognize and respond to the needs of children with intellectual or developmental disabilities who may be experiencing abuse or maltreatment. Specifically, the law requires that the state’s Mandated Identification and Reporting of Child Abuse and Maltreatment/Neglect coursework now include protocols and guidance for identifying abuse in this population.

This is a new requirement that applies even to those who previously completed the mandated reporter training required by April 1, 2025. All mandated reporters must complete the revised training curriculum by November 17, 2026.

The NYSED has updated its guidance on this new requirement: "if you have completed Mandated Reporter Training between 11/1/2022 and 8/31/2025, you may complete a short (15 minute) addendum on this additional topic which will be available through most approved providers."

As healthcare professionals, chiropractors are included among New York State’s mandated reporters. This means it is essential that our members plan to take the updated coursework in advance of the deadline to remain in compliance with state law.

Information about approved training providers can be accessed on the New York State Education Department website

We will continue to provide updates and resources as additional details and approved training options become available.
